Weather station deployed!
Last Tuesday, May 7, a team of York University (Christian Haas, Anne Bublitz and Justin Beckers) deployed 'Cold Facts WS_001' on the sea ice, 110 km North of Canada at 83°48.74N / 63°52.98W.
We have received the first data packages via satellite. The weather station works flawlessly and is ready to track sea ice movements and meteorological conditions along the way.

The conception of this instrument has been in the making for many years. It started in 2003 in search for a portable, autonomous and easy to deploy polar weather station for the 2005 Pole Track expedition. It took 10 years to improve the design and to create a mature instrument.
Very soon ‘Cold Facts WS_002’ will be deployed in Barrow Alaska to join a benchmarking and calibration test performed by the University of Washington. This is only the beginning. From now on we have an instrument at hand that can help non-scientist like polar explorers to make a meaningful contribution to climate change and polar research. Now it’s time to involve the community of polar explorers and travellers to create additional capacity to existing research programs.
This is the exact mission of ‘Cold Facts’. A platform that promotes scientific data collection in the polar regions and fact-based communication on climate change. Let’s mark and celebrate this important success with a big thank you to all who have joined me somewhere in this continuous journey.

Toont maar weer eens aan dat een aantal van de karakteristieken van een succesvol poolreiziger - oa doorzettingsvermogen, eigengereidheid en inventiviteit - ook sterk bijdragen aan een betere wereld.
Proficiat Marc! Dat er de komende jaren maar veel stations ingezet mogen worden.
